Out in the life of the legendary chief designer of strategic nuclear submarines CKB Rubin, Sergei Kovalev. Sergei Kovalev was born August 15, 1919 in St. Petersburg. During the Great Patriotic War in the evacuation, he graduated and was assigned to CDB-18 (now the Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering "Rubin"), where he worked as designer, then a senior designer.
From 1948 to 1958, Kovalev as an assistant, then deputy, and Finally, the chief designer he led the development and construction of submarine of project 617 with a combined-cycle turbine plant. On tests of the submarine the boat was first reached submerged speed of 20 knots.
Since 1958 he has headed the work on developing the nuclear submarine of Project 658, armed with ballistic missiles, and from then on he was the chief and then chief designer of nuclear submarines and submarine cruisers of strategic purpose, armed ballistic missiles. Total for eight projects Kovalev built 92 submarines.
Recently Kovalev worked on further development of sea-based strategic weapons - building a series of strategic submarines of Project 955.
